"The water system has changed our lives for the better. Now we can easily water the garden which provides us our food. And the purified water makes the children much healthier."
No, this is not named for (nor endowed by) the US restaurant chain of same name! But rather, it sits on an otherwise flat, rather arid, mid-size plot in Hmawbi Township some 68 kilometers north of Yangon. Before Rotary built their new water system, the children had to carry buckets of water fairly long distances to irrigate their garden. Rotary ended that when we gave them their new water system, and the kids are very grateful for this huge help to their daily lives.
All the residents of this orphanage also experienced a terrifying night May 3-4, 2008, when their former, rather flimsy bamboo residence structure was nearly torn apart by the power of Cyclone Nargis. While it stood with much damage, Rotary’s newly completed water structure did not move a millimeter in the onslaught. They also now have a new house!
